Environmental Program
The Fairmont Royal York began an active Health & Safety Environmental Program in 1989 and has since made great strides in the area of environmental stewardship.
Since the program began, the hotel has reduced its landfill waste by 71%. Used soaps, shampoos, and linens are donated to Toronto hostels and shelters, and more than 235,000 aluminum cans are recycled annually. More than 27 agencies throughout Toronto receive food distributed from The Fairmont Royal York through the Second Harvest Program.
Water consumption has dropped by 40,000 gallons per month with the introduction of the hotel's Towel Conservation Program in guest rooms. Blue boxes for recycling paper are now located in every guest room, meeting room, and in all offices. In 1994, over 320,000 pounds of paper were recycled.
